Dog Walks around Whitstable, Herne Bay & Canterbury

OK, we know we had you at ‘dog’.
They’re purposefully designed to be super cute so you can forgive all their sins.

But between licking leftovers, stalking you to the loo, hogging half your bed and barking at anyone who deigns to walk within 50 feet of your home, they really are your best friend.
And the friendship doesn’t end there.
Once you get a dog, you’re in.
No longer do you wander the walks of Whitstable, Herne Bay and Canterbury unnoticed. You’re part of a secret society. Where you previously wandered said routes invisible to your fellow man; other dog owners now nod, smile, stop and chat.
But let us be plain; you are no longer a person in your own right. You are simply your pup’s mum/dad. “Oh, look, there’s Archie’s dad”, they’ll cry. Just make your peace with it.
In light of your newfound fame, your furry friend is a great way to enjoy the green garden of England, grab some exercise and socialise.
Coastal walks, historic routes, woodland walks… there is plenty to choose from. And if you’re looking for the best places to walk your dog, then look no further.

The Best Dog Walks of Whitstable, Canterbury and Herne Bay

Whitstable’s West Beach is a popular dog-friendly spot that boasts a stunning view of the sunset and plenty of fishing boats, huts and groynes for your pup to explore. Plus, 98% of beaches along the coast of Canterbury are dog-friendly all year round.

If a slightly longer walk is more your thing, then dust off your hiking shoes for The Crab and Winkle Walk. This 7.6-mile route follows the old Crab and Winkle railway line from Canterbury to Whitstable. It conveniently passes through picturesque Blean Woods which has designated trails for your dog.

Speaking of Blean Woods… why not visit Clowes Wood? This lesser-known woodland in the Blean Wood nature reserve is highly accessible for all thanks to a purpose-built pathway. Wind your way down the plentiful single-track paths and get your steps in.

Looking for your historical fix? “Old Dog, New Tricks” is a gentler, family-friendly 1.5-mile walk that follows the footsteps of Queen Bertha around Canterbury. Historical sites include Canterbury Cathedral, St. Augustine’s Abbey, and St. Martins Church.

Chartham to Canterbury is a flat, pedestrianised and (frankly) beautiful route along the banks of the River Stour. Pass heritage sites such as Chartham Paper Mill and Milton Church. Look out for wildlife on your 3-mile walk including Kingfishers and areas of natural beauty.

There are plenty of cafes and refreshment spots dotted along the coastline and many welcome dogs inside – ideal if the weather is inclement or a cup of tea is calling. Your furry friend can enjoy a welcome bowl of water.

Getting out and about is an ideal way to look after yourself, and your dog, and socially take in the stunning sights of Whitstable, Herne Bay and Canterbury.

Dust off your dog-walking shoes. Grab the dog lead. Adventure awaits!

And you just never know who you might meet. It could wind up tea for two (or should we say four?).
